  On January 22, 2009 Lewis Schiliro was confirmed as Secretary of the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security. His mission was to protect the safety of people and property in the State of Delaware. As Secretary, he oversaw eight divisions, which include the Delaware State Police, the Delaware Emergency Management Agency, Capitol Police, Gaming Enforcement, Highway Safety, and two Councils that advocate for persons with disabilities. Secretary Schiliro is accredited with several key accomplishments during his tenure including the creation of State Gun Investigation Unit; strengthening gun laws; implementing a comprehensive school safety program; creating a new Division of Forensic Science/Commission of Forensic Science and Division of Gaming Enforcement; enhanced court security; and the Delaware State Police Maritime Unit. At Secretary Schiliro retirement, City of Wilmington officials highlighted his involvement in crime reduction in the city during his tenure, achieved through Operation Pressure Point, high visibility operation, gun buyback program and Public Safety Strategies Safety Commission, among other achievements.
