Thesis Title: The Integration of Multiple Sources of Sonic Hedgehog in the Spinal Cord Contribute to the Production of First-Born Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells Which Become Critical for Synapse Remodeling in Response to Adult Motor Neuron Injury My thesis work centered around the early development of the spinal cord to further understand the transition from neurogenesis to gliogenesis. Additionally, I investigated the role of Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cells (OPCs) in responding to peripheral nerve injury to model aspects of pathology in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS. Skills: -Data analysis and presentation -Immunohistochemisty -Confocal and Fluorescence microscopy -Cryosectioning of CNS and muscle tissue -qPCR -Mouse behavioral paradigms: gait analysis, complex running wheel -Electroporation in ovo chick -mES differentiation into motor neurons -Peripheral nerve injury models: crush, axotomy -Utilization and maintenance of 19 transgenic mouse lines. -Mouse embryo staging and dissection Responsibilities: -Initial set up of laboratory at The City College of New York. -Maintained laboratory equipment and inventory. -Designed and conducted experiments involving animal behavior, embryonic development, disease and injury animal models. -Optimization of numerous Molecular Biology protocols. -Trained 12 undergraduate students, 2 graduate students, and 2 Post-Doctoral Fellows in Molecular Biology Techniques. -Presented data at weekly team meetings. -Annually traveled to conferences to present research in both poster and presentation form.
