Founded, established and managed a non-profit corporation of 80 staff with a $6 million operating budget exclusive of real estate development expenses. Created and preserved affordable housing communities in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia specializing in redevelopment of severely distressed communities and preservation of affordable properties threatened by hot market pressures. Purchased, rehabilitated, owned, and asset managed 3,536 apartments in 24 properties valued at over $300 million resulting in net income used to subsidize community programs. Operated placed-based community development programs for all ages in fifteen developments providing over 1,000 out-of-school youth and adults with assessment, GED and employment programs, over 400 children and youth annually in educationally-focused programs, and empowering community residents through civic engagement and the use of technology in 11 properties wired for free high speed Internet access in the homes. Recognized as a national leader in efforts starting in 1994 to bridge the “digital divide” by teaching the use of technology, making it accessible to residents of large urban housing complexes and using it to teach, communicate and build relationships in communities.
