This includes methods for helping students identify patterns and themes across their LSA education that relate to their interests, values, and goals, and in making intentional connections to opportunities available through the Opportunity Hub, LSA, U-M, and the outside world to inform their next steps. In particular, I work with students to connect them directly to employment opportunities and to opportunities provided by alums. As a Hub Coach I place students at the center of the co-creative process of defining and preparing for career success. I form relationships and conduct strategic outreach across LSA units, departments, and U-M student groups to further expand the reach and awareness of the LSA Opportunity Hub. Black History Month is a month-long celebration in February of the achievements and historiographies of African Americans. The celebration’s history starts with Carter G. Woodson, an American historian, author, and journal. In September of 1915, Woodson founded what is now known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), an organization dedicated to researching, promoting, and preserving the lives, history, and culture by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. In 1926, ASALH sponsored a national Negro History week. The event grew from local communities to college campuses. By 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month. He invited Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Asian/Pacific Islander American Heritage Month (or A/PIA Heritage Month) is a university-wide celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander American Heritage. Faculty and staff participants will be members of a learning community who participate in an initial retreat, several workshops addressing issues related to cultural competency, and a collaborative project designed to impact the campus community in some meaningful way. Participants of the program will complete baseline measures before the implementation of the program, with post measures assessed after each component of the program in order to assess overall impact of the program, as well as the relative contributions of each component. These measures include implicit attitudes and stereotypes of various racial/ethnic groups and implicit attitudes toward individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. We will also measure participants’ previous experiences with workshops addressing issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, self-perceptions of their understanding of concepts related to cultural competency and their ability to apply skills related to those concepts, issues related to social privilege, ability to empathize with others, as well as perceived justification of the societal status quo and motivations to act in non-prejudiced ways. In addition, we will assess participants’ ability to understand and apply the skills they learn from each component of the program. 2. We examined the role of two types of intergroup threat, symbolic and realistic, in the relationship between system justification and attitudes toward MeToo and immigration. We examined how media exposure regarding MeToo and immigration were related to system justification, intergroup threat, and attitudes. Symbolic and realistic threat associated with feminists mediated the relationship between gender system justification and attitudes toward MeToo; symbolic and realistic threat associated with immigrants mediated the relationship between economic system justification and attitudes toward immigration.

The retreats are held at a hotel in downtown Rochester, and is facilitated by Geneseo faculty and staff. There is no cost to participants. Students will be picked up at the airport or bus station on Thursday, before MLK day or may drive to the hotel. Students will be transported to campus on Sunday.
