A process technician’s main duties center around maintaining manufacturing process equipment and ensuring such machinery operates in a clean organized environment. To do this, process technicians are required to schedule and perform regular maintenance, cleaning, and repairs of all equipment; they also order necessary machine parts and upgrade equipment when necessary to ensure optimal performance. In addition, process technicians perform some administrative tasks, such as documenting all machine maintenance, making equipment orders, and improving or developing safety guidelines for equipment use. Most individuals in these positions work during first shift; however, there are some companies that hire second-shift process technicians as well.Process technicians must be knowledgeable of the operations and repair procedures of the equipment with which they work. In addition, this position requires basic computer skills, since process technicians are typically required to use programs such as Microsoft Word or Excel to document activities and use the internet to communicate with other staff. In addition, all process technicians must know how to read and use schematics relating to manufacturing equipment. Although this career requires a high level of specialized knowledge, this position usually only requires a high school diploma or equivalent in terms of formal education; however, an associate’s degree in a relevant field may be preferred. Generally, process technicians must be able to lift up to fifty pounds and stand or walk for long periods of time.Process technicians are often placed in supervisory positions and instruct factory laborers in the use and care of the equipment. Typically, they report directly to a foreman or a team of other process technicians when there are problems or as part of regular status updates.
