In my two years in the faculty of physics at LMU, I worked on a nano-satellite project for discrete variable, polarization encoded quantum key distribution. My specific activities included: - measuring the polarization rotation through a specially fabricated wave-guide - assembling micro-polarizer arrays from a dyed polymer film - assisting a Master student with the experimental setup to measure the drift of polarization states in a single mode fiber under vacuum and temperature variation - calibrating polarizers and quarter wave plates and finely adjusting the laser beam for a highly precise measurement of the degree of polarization - tutoring the atomic physics course for Bachelor students and correcting the final exam - setting up the VCSELs (vertical cavity surface emitting lasers onto a printed circuit board, connected by wedge-bonded gold wire, and soldered U.FL connectors - automating the characterization of laser pulse properties, including the optical power, stability, full width half maximum, and signal to noise ratio - constructing a high-vacuum chamber, including a Peltier element and thermistors for precise temperature control, as well as electrical feedthroughs - constructing copper and aluminum components, including the printed circuit board holder, heat sink block, and heat transport mechanism - measuring the optical wavelength and optical power as a function of temperature under vacuum - researching the scientific literature regarding the long-term reliability of lasers in space, the risks of laser operation in space without hermetical packaging, and the risk of electrostatic discharge as a potential cause of failure Show less
