      • Primary user and caretaker of heavily modified EPI-930 molecular beam epitaxy system • Performed growth of SiGe two dimensional electron gas structures for quantum computing research • Achieved an order of magnitude increase in signal to noise ratio of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) system used to monitor silicon growth rate • Implemented automated feedback control of silicon electron gun with AAS system • Improved communication between AAS hardware and MATLAB and MOLLY control software • Designed algorithm to convert raw absorption numbers , which are controllable with PID controller, to growth rates, using MOLLY to account for adjustment based on background difference between signal and reference lines • Developed MATLAB software to control E-gun sweep pattern • Integrated webcam viewing of Silicon melt into control software so user could monitor melt conditions remotely while adjusting the sweep settings • Theorized link between oxygen content and growth rate in Si quantum wells • Analyzed data set combining results from my own work and my predecessor’s—this identified a growth window which would facilitate low-oxygen content growth • Demonstrated system limitations which prevented access to the acceptable growth window, thus establishing impossibility of the project with the available equipment Show less

      • Jun 2006 - Dec 2012

      • Performed growth of InAs/GaSb superlattices using molecular beam epitaxy • Performed maintenance on molecular beam epitaxy chamber and components • Brought a new Gen-20 molecular beam epitaxy system online • Improved superlattice Shockley-Reed-Hall lifetime by an order of magnitude, from ~8ns to ~80ns • Expanded high temporal resolution (~50ms) shutter tracking system to new shutter design on Gen-20 system • Developed software for tracking shutter opening and closing times • Utilized shutter software for identifying MOLLY control software bug which was causing anomalous layer thicknesses in superlattice growths • Developed software for tracking of group-V material fluxes and group-III material growth rates. • Incorporated a graphical user interface for easy use and long term tracking of data • Implemented automated systems to track V-material fluxes, this included automated running of recipes for measuring the V-fluxes, and a system to automatically extract the valve-position to flux relationship from the beam equivalent flux data • Initiated use of cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy for investigation of superlattice samples • Used optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, photoluminescence and hall effect measurements on semiconductor samples • Worked on recovery of clean room and MBE system after flooding of Iowa river resulted in 20 inches of water in the lab Show less
