Nolan Dost

When I joined The Cannonade as a UI Designer looking for work for a semester amidst talented focused professionals, Lelan demolished my expectations where others merely hit the acceptable bar of "just passing" in that limp tone that lacks ambition. Lelan consistently and enthusiastically pursued a high bar of quality with a realistic angle that roots him firmly within reality. It was not enough to just pass nor was it enough to just get the work done. We had to get the work done well and without stomping on our lives as project work leans towards without the guidance of a professional. As a team, we were not workhorses nor were we supermen and despite my praise, Lelan is no exception. As a group we failed and as a group we succeeded. Lelan led us on the victorious path with pride and a sturdy conviction that few others can match. Lelan is a fine and highly skilled coworker and close friend that I value highly. Working with him is a privilege few people have been lucky to experience and many others should be so lucky as to follow.

As a Supplemental Teaching Assistant, I was a designer employed to support students through the difficulties of online learning during the stressful times we found ourselves in. We were made available both digitally and in-person to supplement existing resources. I primarily fulfilled this role by assisting with the multidisipline junior-level game projects and with an internal research project on the useage of Shotgun. While DigiPen classes were taught online, on-campus resources were still available for students who did not have a computer at home. However, tutor and TA roles rely on student availability, and both them and the professors are only available digitally. Our group provided more experienced, hands-on assistance across our disciplines than student workers, and additionally sought to provide in-person assistance to those students who find that more effective in their studies. In this role, I've been responsible for assistance for any of a design student's classes, including multiple game design roles, scripting, game engine use, and a variety of other supporting skillsets. As the only individual in this role who was not already an instructor with DigiPen, I've enjoyed the opportunity to work with - and learn from - those with more education experience. Being offered the time and resources to use my design skills as a way to help others through hard times has been both incredibly satisfying and a fantastic opportunity to improve myself and my skills. Outbreak is a small, volunteer group of students at DigiPen that run a customized version of Humans versus Zombies for 100+ players on a semesterly basis. This results in similarities to live-service development and a fast-paced environment that needs to deal with a lot of real-world limitations.
