    • President - English Society
      • May 2017 - Jun 2018

I was elected as President of the University of Sheffield's English Society in May 2017. My main roles were to oversee the direction of the society, chair weekly meetings and ensure that events were planned properly with all Health & Safety measures in place and with comprehensive Risk Assessments completed. Our biggest events throughout the year were; the Fresher's Week bar crawl, the Christmas Ball, a guest lecture from David Crystal and our Summer Ball. All of which only work with meticulous planning and preparation which starts months in advance. My role also tasked me with overseeing the financial planning of the society alongside the Vice President (who acts as treasurer). I ensure all of the Society funds and sponsorships are correct.I had 11 committee members, which included the executive team (Myself, Vice President, Academic and Inclusions Officer and Secretary) as well as a range of positions such as; two Charity Officers, two Publicity Officers, two Social Secretaries, and an Activities Secretary. The English Society also have two popular sports teams headed by their relative Secretaries (Football and Netball). Our netball branch has two teams and our football team is looking to expand this year from 6-a-side to also having a full sized team (15-18 regular players) Over the course of the year I created two positions on the committee; a 1st year English Literature Representative and a 1st year English Language Representative, this is a move away from a single 1st year representative position as I felt that the English Language Department has been neglected by the society in recent years.

I was assigned to work 'with staff on the 'student futures' project. This will involve engaging Arts and Humanities students in preparing for their futures to ensure that they are equipped to take up development opportunities and to make choices for the future that they want to create for themselves.'

    • 1st Year Mentoring
      • Sep 2016 - Jun 2018

I acted as a 1st year mentor for two consecutive years while at university. In my first year as a mentor, I offered support to a single 1st year student. My role offered a positive experience and allowed me to offer my knowledge of Sheffield to a younger peer. I also assisted my mentee with course related issues as well as offering pastoral support. In my second year I was provided with two new mentees, both of whom were Erasmus students (Studying at Sheffield for one year). My experience of mentoring has been massively different this year as these students require different forms of support and ask vastly different questions.

    • 3rd Year Representative for English Literature
      • Oct 2017 - May 2018

I represented my academic peers on the Staff/Student Committee, a board of elected students who communicate any issues/concerns that students may have with the relevant staff and attempt to come up with solutions.

    • Student Ambassador, School of English
      • 2016 - May 2018

I frequently acted as a student ambassador for the University of Sheffield's School of English. I would work talking to both prospective students and their parents, answering any queries about the University/ University life. I also assisted in the general running of the day, working with coordinators to ensure all prospective students are kept together and do not get lost.

    • Research Lead
      • Apr 2017 - Jun 2017

I undertook a paid research project within the School of English (Working closely with the Director for Teaching and Learning in the School of English) to investigate, and produce my findings on, an internal project. The project sought to determine the positive and negative elements of the student experience from the first year of undergraduate study through to the third-year of undergraduate study. The project resulted in helping the School of English determine several faults with the programme and informed the overhaul of the undergraduate course in the 2019/20 academic year which can be seen on the University of Sheffield’s webpage.

    • Student Ambassador/Mentor - Outreach Team
      • Oct 2016 - Jun 2017

In my second year of study at the University of Sheffield, I worked as an ambassador/mentor at a local school (Netherthorpe School), mentoring three year nine pupils. My role was to work with pupils who had the ability to go to University but were unlikely to do so due to a variety of personal obstacles such as financial difficulties. My time was spent trying to gain a sustainable and healthy relationship with each pupil whilst helping them to hone some of their core skills and strengthen their weaker points.

    • Project Assistant - Green Impact Team
      • Sep 2016 - Jun 2017

In my second year at the University of Sheffield I joined the Estates and Facilities Management team as part of the Green Impact team. Green Impact is a programme that challenges groups within the University to lower their carbon footprint. My role was to directly assist the estates and Facilities Manager with a small select team. I was deeply involved in two projects; having recently launched a web page, I was tasked with the interviewing and blogging of University based individuals involved in renewable energy and other relevant lines of research. I was also part of a team in communication with a University based in Greece. Our task was to help set up a Green Impact team in Greece.

    • Publicity Officer - English Society
      • May 2016 - Jun 2017

At the end of my first year at the University of Sheffield i was elected as one of two Publicity Officers for the English Society.Between myself and my partner we split the workload. I was responsible for managing the Societies Social Media pages and marketing events. As well as this, I also responded promptly to queries from both non-society and society members. I was expected to be involved in the setting up and running of events in order to have a full understanding of the details, in order to publicise them positively and successfully to our target audience. I was personally responsible for the creation of the 'Book of the Week' scheme, which has been hugely popular with students and increased weekly engagement massively. The 'Book of the Week' scheme was created to combat the English Societies lack of inclusion based events. I created this idea to combat growing discontent among society members that the society had become too focused upon social interactions and not enough about the department. I aimed to ground the society and make students feel as if they were part of a departmental society. 'Book of the Week' achieved great success and will be running in the next academic year.
