We started this project focussing on hearing awareness program for musicians in Malaysia in 2019. At the moment, we have collected qualitative data from the musicians in Malaysia focussing on their hearing symptoms and habits to use hearing protectors. We also adapted the Dangerous Decibels modules to make the modules more culturally appropriate to the local community. We are looking forward to conduct hearing assessments on the musicians on a large scale to better understand the effects of music exposure on their hearing in the near future. Doing research takes up a lot of time and passion. Before starting this project, we spent a large amount of time exploring the Dangerous Decibels modules and finally we came across the idea to focus on the musicians. It was a long journey and the project was strongly affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. However, we did not give up on the project. It’s a wonderful learning journey. Show less

I was trained to enhance my skills to perform hearing test for adults and elderly patients. I was guided by my supervisors to conduct hearing aid trial sessions professionally to meet the needs of every patient. During my internship at 20dB Hearing, I was exposed to the latest hearing aid technology and sales techniques. It was a whole new experience that worth to have for every student clinician before entering the working world. I was given the opportunity to provide talks on recreational noise induced hearing loss and perform hearing screening for teachers and school children during my internship. The teachers were surprised when they found out that children are at risk of hearing loss due to overexposure to loud music. Besides, I was honoured to be invited by my supervisor to join his discussions with the school principals on the importance of having special education in their settings. These experiences have enlightened me about the current education system and situation of children with special needs in Malaysia. Show less

I was exposed to different hearing loss cases from all ages during my internship at HKL. I conducted routine tests for new patients/ follow up patients and at the same time I also performed electrophysiological test such as ABR test for young babies. Due to the large amount of patients during my internship, I was trained to make accurate diagnosis and design appropriate management plan for adults and paediatric patients under limited time and supervision. I was offered the opportunity to observe and assist one of the senior audiologist during her vestibular clinic. It was amazed to see how the vestibular assessments were conducted. I learned to be more precise during the case history taking to rule out other possible causes that could lead to vestibular problems. Show less
