    • NICU Community Volunteer

I volunteered in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Jordan Valley Medical Center. The nurses and I took care of the newborns; as well as keeping the facility clean for the parents and patients. In the future, I want to become a Pediatrician. Volunteering in the hospital has made me realize when dealing with young patients they are more sustainable to illness/accidents. Therefore we were very delicate with our procedures and kept the facility clean. The health care team all worked together to provide the patient and their family the best, efficient, and attentive care. I learned how to bathe, feed, swaddle, and take care of the premature and newborn babies. Aside from hands-on experience with the patients; I was a secretary and helped organize, clean, answer the door, and greet the visitors/family. This was a wonderful opportunity, and I would love to continue to expand my knowledge and experience in the NICU.

For our Senior Service Project, I volunteered to tutor the students at our school along with other seniors. We helped the juniors and sophomores with their homework or helped them study for exams. All students were in concurrent as well as high school classes. We would spend at least one hour to help the students. This service project has improved my public speaking and social skill. Students improved their academic performances, increase in confidence, and more. This service project started from the beginning of the September 2014 till May 2015.

Originally Itineris Early College High School was a part of the Jordan Academy for Technology and Careers (JATC) in West Jordan. In August of 2014, Itineris was able to become an independent public early college high school. Their new building was across the street and next to the Jordan Valley Medical Center. During the summer of 2014, I helped my school move and organize equipment for biotechnology and biology.

I was the Health Occupations Students of America president for IECHS. The company featured for HOSA in 2014 was the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We ran a blood drive for American Red Cross and created a movie night at the school with funds that went to the nonprofit organization. Our school was able to raise around $3,000.I was able to improve my communication and leadership skills with my companions. I was the Health Occupations Students of America president for IECHS.
