Working in the lab of Dr. Natividad Ruiz, PhD., I contributed to scientific understanding of outer membrane biogenesis in Gram negative bacteria. This work required strong time management and organizational skills as well as technical competence and critical thinking abilities. Further, regular participation in lab meetings and in an annual department symposium required development of keen communication and presentation skills.

Graduate Teaching Assistant
-
Jan 2013 - Apr 2014
In the Spring 2013 semester as a Teaching Assistant for Biology 1102 (Human Biology), I helped students with diverse majors understand the wonderful complexity of the human body during weekly recitation classes. I prepared review and assessment materials, including (but not limited to) worksheets, graphics, presentations, activities, and quizzes. During the Spring 2014 semester in Microbiology 4100 (General Microbiology), I helped students develop important technical abilities critical to working in a microbiology lab. This included monitoring student progress during labs, demonstrating proper technique, and assessing student knowledge of theory and purpose behind experiments. Show less

Undergraduate Research Assistant
-
May 2009 - Jun 2011
As an undergraduate student I worked in the lab of Dr. John Bellizzi. His laboratory, research, and training fostered my interest in scientific research and allowed me to hone highly technical and logical thinking skills students are often not fully exposed to in undergraduate lab courses. During my time in this lab, I worked towards biochemically characterizing and elucidating crystal structures of proteins involved in regulating the mammalian Circadian Rhythm.
