Although Layne and I worked on different teams at Environics Analytics, we were invited to join an ad hoc group to research new software, methodologies, and programming languages in data science. I was learning how to use the NumPy and pandas in Python, and Layne taught me how to overcome many challenges that I encountered as a beginner. Throughout our many conversations and his demonstrations from his own Jupyter Notebooks, he showed a strong proficiency with these packages and with Python programming in general. (He also introduced Seaborn to me as an excellent alternative to Matplotlib, and I found Seaborn to be much easier to use!) Layne also has a deep interest in neural networks, and he enhanced my understanding of this broad topic through numerous conversations. His knowledge of this subject was demonstrated in an episode of my talk show, The Central Equilibrium (https://youtu.be/eRGgqblwhWg). As you can tell from this video, Layne can explain a complex topic with clarity and patience. I wished that I had the chance to work directly with Layne on actual projects. Besides being quite knowledgeable about his professional interests, he is a kind and friendly co-worker who consistently brought positivity to our office. (Environics Analytics recently recognized his substantive contributions and his collegiality with a promotion to become a Senior Research Associate.) I only hope that our professional paths will cross again and provide me the opportunity to learn more from him!
