I was responsible for organising the logistics of various projects in the field, and ensuring all physical, chemical and biological samples were collected in accordance with company methods. I was in regular contact with both clients and landowners whom I called and met to discuss projects and gain access to private land. In the office I completed data entry tasks for quality control purposes and updated site maps with new information. Show less

Working as a seasonal zookeeper/aquarist in London Zoo aquarium, I carried out the day-to-day management of 27 species kept in captive breeding programmes at ZSL off show. Pupfish are a highly threatened family. I was responsible for the following: maintaining optimal water quality (through regular water changes and water testing), animal health checks, animal feeding, egg collecting, fry rearing, capacity management, stock assessments and record keeping, to name a few. Caring for fish and completing the lifecycle from egg, fry, sub-adult, to adult was immensely rewarding. I am proud to say I assisted the survival success of a number of critically endangered species whose numbers were declining rapidly within the collection. Additionally, I worked with the on show, display species. I carried out food preparation; mixed taxa feeding routines; tank maintenance and theming; water quality analyses and water chemistry modifications; filtration and systems maintenance and plumping, among many other duties. The job was highly varied and daily priorities change dependent first and foremost on the health and welfare of the animals. I was fond of the daily variance in tasks which suited my dynamic nature. My job was highly practical and required me to 'think outside the box', in order to provide solutions to the unique challenges posed by the aquarium building, which was erected in 1924. Show less

I am currently interning at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) within the UK and Europe team, which has much focus on freshwater conservation. At ZSL I am responsible for the processing of three months' of Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar recordings from the 2013 silver eel migration, to determine the extent of European eel escapement from a River Thames tributary. I am taking the downstream movement of eel, which must cross a weir, as a proxy for migratory eel escapement. . My results should prove useful for testing present escapement models and informing decisions taken by the Thames Eel Management Plan Implementation Group. This group is charged with describing the current status of eel in the Thames river basin district, assessing compliance with the target set out in Council Regulation No 1100/2007 and detailing management measures to increase silver eel escapement, which has seen a sharp long-term decline since the 1980s.My internship has, thusfar, been a fantastic opportunity to experience and support the conservation of the European eel within a world leading, international conservation charity. There I have developed many transferable skills including but not limited to: project management, time management communication and organisation. Show less

Very many assignments were underpinned by data collected in the field from rivers, lakes, seafloor and rocky and sandy beaches. Time was also spent in the laboratory identifying freshwater macroinvertebrates, ageing fish and conducting granulometric analysis. The modules on this course include; methods for environmental research; functioning, assessment and management of aquatic ecosystems; freshwater and estuarine resources: science, management and policy; river processes and river rehabilitation; marine and freshwater fishery management and aquaculture; marine resource management.
