National ALS Biorepository CoordinatorOversee the National ALS Biorepository daily functions in accordance with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, guidelines. Oversee the collection of Biospecimen samples (blood, saliva, tissue, hair and nails) and postmortem samples (brain, spinal cord, CSF, bone, muscle, skin) from PALS interested in donating. Supervise participant coordinators and research staff, oversee laboratory process, distribution of specimen kits and coordinate phlebotomy appointments. Oversee researcher requests for specimens and data, coordinate distribution of specimens to researchers, conduct weekly conference calls with Biorepository contractors. ALS Pilot Study CoordinatorOversee the study process that the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), a federal public health agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. considering the feasibility of creating a national bank of biological samples known as a “Biorepository.” These samples (blood, saliva, tissue, hair and nails) would come from PALS in the National ALS Registry who are interested in donating. Connecting samples to information already being collected from PALS will make this a more complete registry. Supervise participant coordinators and research staff, oversee laboratory process, distribution of specimen kits and coordinate phlebotomy appointments. ALS Surveillance SpecialistConduct surveillance on a state and metropolitan area-based Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Surveillance Project funded by ATSDR. The main goal of this project is to evaluate the completeness of the National ALS Registry and to obtain reliable and timely information on the incidence and prevalence of ALS. Contacts physicians and schedules meetings to explain the ALS project, train medical staff on how to collect data, follow up with medical staff then enter the data into a database for analysis.
