This program encourages local municipalities, schools, and homeowners to plant native pollinator gardens to support the preservation of plant and insect biodiversity. Incorporating interpretive signage into each garden's design adds an important educational component. I collaborate with the Conservation Department to install these gardens, work on program development activities, and inspire community involvement through various outreach event. My internship at the State Botanical Garden focused on the goals of the Center for Native Plant Studies: to improve native plant materials, safeguard imperiled species, and propagate natives for restoration purposes. Seed collecting, stratifying and germinating allowed me to see native plants through the entire propagation process. I have been involved in the outplanting of these species to restore several sites and increase biodiversity. This research project was based on three main goals, all which emphasize sustainable and organic production of watermelon. The first goal concentrates on the evaluation of cultivar type and cultivation methods in terms of weed suppression. The second goal focuses on breeding a compact variety with elite varieties. Lastly, the third objective involves identifying iner- and intracultivar variation of six commonly grown heirloom and open pollinated watermelon varieties. Activities included making controlled crosses in the greenhouse, pruning and watering, setting up irrigation systems, and collecting data on the growth of the watermelon. Show less
