Experience

    • Costume Designer
      • Sep 2012 - Present

I have now commenced my 4th year of college in (Instatute of Art, Design and Technoligy) IADT. My course concentrates on the production process relating to stage and screen and I have developed an understanding and an appreciation of the importance of costume to a ‘production’. The course involves modules that will prepare us for the professional world and includes many projects. Every module of my course demands a high level of research, design and construction, such as the designing and making of costumes using non-traditional materials, costumes inspired by animals, costumes based on an art movement (which involved producing a video and catwalk modelling my costume) costumes were inspired by decades of the 20th century and combining this with a pop diva to create a piece, tailoring a WW1 military jacket, costumes for the RIAM opera Cunning Little Vixen which and Ormindo, Costumes for our college drama society Mid-Summer Night Dream which appeared in the Pavilion in Dunlaoire, Design Projects that are designed in detail for movie and play. My course also includes high standard technical modules which includes Photography, Photoshop, Premiere, Film making, Web Design, PowerPoint and Presentations. Other beneficial and essential modules include Academics, Life drawing, Set design, Puppet making and I was accepted for an internship in the National Opera House in Wexford for 7 weeks which was organisioned by my college . I was offered a position as a machinest in the alterations workshop of the National Opera House. This involved attending fittings where I would take notes of alterations needed, labeling and taking photos of the costumes for records. I would then alter the costumes as the notes described. I would also be responsible for preparing costumes, dressing and quick changes. I was offered a position as a machinest in the alterations workshop of the National Opera House. This work experience was working backstage on the TV3 Children’s Toy Show this experience allowed me to work behind the scenes in a TV studio. I was responsible in helping the acts with costumes and costumes changes. This work was fast pace and it was essential to be organized in labeling costumes, creating rails for each group, problem solving, repairs, reading the schedules and ensuring the children knew when to change costumes. During tech I was to stand in for the presenters and the acts for lighting and camera. I was in charge of collecting costumes off the children and then ensuring they received their costumes. • Assistant to the Costume Designer
      • May 2015 - Oct 2015

I was assistant to the Costume Designer and Wardrobe Supervisor for one of the main shows ‘Koanga’. This internship began in May and was intricately connected with my college course and involved creating a case study which I was graded on. The case study included emails, designs, documents, measurement sheets, photos, fabric samples and invoices I gathered between the supervisor and designer. My case study was then used as the costume bible for the whole production team to use. My work over the summer also involved online sourcing and shopping for chorus costumes in charity and retail shops with the wardrobe supervisor. If anything was required in Dublin it was my responsibility to gather and source the items or fabric samples. I unloaded all purchased costume garments and organized the rails so that the costumes were easy to assign to performers. I created an itiemised document that would help the designer and supervisor know what colour and sizes were purchased and needed for the chorus. I would then go shopping with the designer for additional or missing garments we would then go and source all items. I was also in charge of petty cash and receipts. I assisted with costume fittings for the chorus and shared my opinions and suggestions with the designer and supervisor. I took photos of all fittings and created costume piece documents so that all performers could read and see how each of their costumes was to be worn. These documents were then uploaded to the production teams so that the company and the director could see the costumes. I attended all production meetings, rehearsals, performances, took notes, gave suggestions and opinions on costumes.I organized the dressing rooms, rails and quick change rails. These rails needed to be reorganized after every performance. I was responsible for quick changes backstage and ensuring all costume garments and accessories were on the correct rails and that all rails were located in there correct location each night. De Stafford Bridal is a well-known designer bridal shop located in Dublin 2 Ireland. During my time there I worked on decorative detailing to be completed for each wedding dress. This involved copying a sample dress that was previously made, I was to follow the notes provided in case the bride had a different request to the sample, this involved cutting out the lace detailing, then pinning the details in the correct place and hand sewing them in place. Each dress was to be completed to perfection without any flaws. The job also included pulling dresses for the week to ensure that the dresses were worked on and accounted for. Part of the work also involved taking phone calls and messages, making appointments and covering in the De Stafford Bridal Store itself which involved greeting Brides and showing them to the dressing rooms. I would be required on occasion to go to the shops to collect materials, fabric sampling, dye and beading sampling. Show less

    • Wardrobe Assistant
      • Sep 2014 - Nov 2014

My college recently organized a 7 week internship in the ‘National Opera House’ (Wexford). I had to take up residency in Wexford and worked 6 days a week. I began my time working in the wardrobe room helping with ‘finishing details’ and preparing costumes for each of the 3 separate operas at the festival. I had the opportunity to contribute suggestions, some which were taken on board and followed through. When the festival began I was to organize the costumes every day and ensure that each item of clothing was ready for each individual performer. I was to help the performers dress and come up with solutions for any damaged or missing items. I would take note of any problems found with the costume and return to the wardrobe mistress and designer. I was given the responsibility of assisting with ‘quick changes’ this included working with one of the main principal singers, some of these changes had to be accomplished in less than 2 minutes for all his changes. I was in charge of the laundry room where I would wash, iron and press and steam the costumes and lay them out for the next performance. When the festival ended I was to help prepare boxes and pack away the costumes ready to be sent away. Show less

Angels the ‘Costumiers’ is the largest costume supply company in the world based in Hendon London in the United Kingdom. They rent costumes for stage and screen and have qualified dressmakers and designers that design and make costumes for different productions. My work experience was for 2 weeks in the Alterations room. This included repairing costumes, gathering underwear and costumes for different decades and dressing mannequins in order to gain an understanding of how to dress ‘a performer’ properly. It also helped with understanding the importance of underwear to a costume. I was shown different techniques and sewing skills and was also shown how to use an ‘over locker’ and an ‘industrial’ sewing machine. Show less
