First and foremost Lauren is a writer who takes things in: from visual and visceral details, to captivating moments, she never fails to unfold broader truths about the people she encounters. In my experience with Lauren I have also found her to be a thoughtful reader. I have had the pleasure of writing features for our on-campus weekly postings and as my editor, she has always steered my writing with fairness and consistency with our organization's mission. I love her creative ideas. I've work as an on-campus photographer, and Lauren’s innate visual sense has guided the pictorial style that is evident in our publications. She and I have collaborated on multiple media projects and I have always appreciated her clarity in communicating her vision with grace and integrity. Her talents are numerous, but I leaned most on her for her leadership. It has been a great comfort with her at the helm. Lauren accomplishes goals with determination, and steps around potential obstacles with purposeful ease.

Lauren Marks is an exquisite collaborator. Grown in the American theater along some of the fields greatest minds, she took that experience and paired it with her deep knowledge of disability rights and communication skills to grow an impressive career. I brought Lauren in to speak about her book A Stitch of Time in conjunction with our show A New Brain at the Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center. Her connections to the show, the content, and her deep understanding of theater led to a very moving and enlightening evening. She cares deeply about her work, and is an asset to any team. I would highly recommend her humanity and her work.

“An illuminating debut memoir. . . .The book's self-exploration of its patient's inner voice, frightening surgical interventions, and delicate recovery is captivating. . . .Readers will be compelled by the journey of a writer whose voice, however changed, remains her own.” —Kirkus Reviews "Engrossing . . . A story of hope . . .Marks gives an inside account of a brain in the act of healing—including all the ups, downs, and complications—and also supplies useful information for those suffering from aphasia." —Publishers Weekly "A deeply personal—and often surprising—perspective on aphasia." —The Washington Post “A Stitch of Time is fascinating reading for those who want to learn how language works.” —Dr. Temple Grandin, author of The Autistic Brain and Thinking in Pictures “In this sometimes harrowing, sometimes funny, and always very human memoir, Lauren Marks brings us through the year an aneurysm ruptured in her brain leaving her with aphasia. How the loss and return of language changed her is a remarkable journey that she shares with intelligence and grace. A Stitch of Time will leave you hopeful and dazzled and grateful that Marks found words again and shared them with us here.” —Ann Hood, author of The Book That Matters Most and The Obituary Writer "A Stitch of Time is a true story of resilience. Far more interesting than an 'overcomer' tale, it's a story of grit and luck and love and patience. An unforgettable read about a remarkable woman." —Emily Rapp, New York Times bestselling author of The Still Point of the Turning World and Poster Child Show less
