Bio
Ken L.
Lauren is the type of supervisor you can only hope for. For 5 years, first at 42nd Street Moon, and then at Berkeley Playhouse, she was my mentor. She is a consummate professional, but cares deeply about the organizations that are lucky and smart enough to hire her and the staff at those organizations. She is organized, efficient, intelligent and easy to communicate with. She is more interested in preventing problems (and solving them when they arise) than in laying blame or admonishing staff. I miss our working relationship, but value our continued friendship.

I am excited to have recently joined this San Francisco-based training program for opera singers, coaches, and stage directors. My oversight includes artists' services, auditions administration, and general administration. The success of the Merola Opera Program shows in the brilliant careers the Program has helped launch. Many have become the virtual "who’s who" of opera. The Program has nurtured the talents of Brian Asawa, Laura Claycomb, Mark Delevan, Joyce DiDonato, Susan Graham, Jill Grove, Nancy Gustafson, Thomas Hampson, Brian Jagde, Quinn Kelsey, Janis Martin, Lucas Meachem, Leona Mitchell, Sylvia McNair, Anna Netrebko, Ann Panagulias, Ailyn Pérez, Patricia Racette, Michael Schade, Nadine Sierra, Stuart Skelton, Kurt Streit, Patrick Summers, Ruth Ann Swenson, Jess Thomas, Elza van den Heever, Carol Vaness, Rolando Villazón, Deborah Voigt, Janet Williams, Dolora Zajick and numerous others. Merola alumni can be found in an astounding number of venues throughout the world as performers, production artists and teachers. It is my honor and joy to oversee Merola artists' services, and ational auditions in San Francisco, Chicago and New York City. Show less

I was contracted as Grants Manager by TheatreFIRST in Berkeley, whose mission is to provide a stage for marginalized voices. Since joining, I wrote grant proposals that resulted in notable awards from leading arts funders, including California Arts Council, Fleishhacker Foundation and the Zellerbach Family Foundation. Years ago, I served as Executive and Managing Director at 42nd Moon Theatre Company. I was recently recruited to help with their annual gala, heading fundraising and community engagement. I connected with the Board President and Executive Directors and served as volunteer coordinator to the gala, which took place in June 2018 at the Palace of Fine Arts with more than 400 attendees. Working with the Artistic Director, I helped develop a cohesive vision, business model and nonprofit institution for this site-integrated theatre company that connects people with place. I managed all administration functions (contracting, fundraising, marketing, and finance) as well as board relations and meetings. I also handled community engagement and outreach. Overall, I was able to make an impact in professionalizing systems and policies and increasing expectations. I developed a new seasonal model on a project-by-project basis and demonstrated the model's feasibility to the Board of directors with great success. We executed six performances during my tenure. Partnering with board members, I helped draft the development plan and solicit individual donor funds. I negotiated up to 30 contracts per production, including intellectual property rights, product rights, copyrights, special artist agreements, and distribution of net profit. Show less

As senior manager of the entire operation, I drove much needed operational, financial, and value-centric change. I re-envisioned and restructured areas of business, created operational efficiencies, reorganized staff, increased productivity expectations, and improved systems. I provided the turnaround leadership that reversed historic revenue losses, eliminated past debt, and improved institutional practices. During my tenure, we executed four shows in one year with 30 independent contractors and a limited budget. I created the company's first sponsorships with notable brands: Peet's Coffee, Extreme Pizza, Madonna Estates, and American Eagle Outfitters. To strengthen equity, diversity, and inclusion, I promoted new policies and championed direct outreach while fostering positive relationships with staff and artists. Show less

Executive Director

2003 - Dec 2011
As the senior executive, I spearheaded general administration, operations, finance, contracts, and fundraising. I grew the capacity of the organization, strengthened the effectiveness of branding and marketing, and oversaw various change management initiatives. With a focus on opening the theatre to fresh young talent, I established Moon School, an educational program for children to gain valuable skills working in a theatre and putting on a show. I authored winning grant proposals with an understanding of the artistic vision and community impact. I secured the organization's first Hewlett Foundation grant (five years) and was awarded the national Endowment for the Arts grant. To enable the theatre's access to union actors, I negotiated the first Actors' Equity contract, The Bay Area Theater (BAT) Agreement. With a strategic development plan and high-touch engagement, I significantly increased individual donor base and subscriptions. I led a project to start a rental program for our studio space, which achieved positive cash flow. To showcase significant composers, I helped institute the Salon Series, which entailed two shows per year at a 400-seat theatre. Executive Management of organization Show less
