“Innate Defense Regulator Peptides: “New strategies for treating infection and inflammation” The emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria is a major challenge facing modern healthcare since very few novel antibiotics agents are available. Host Defense Peptides (HDPs) and their synthetic derivatives such as the Innate Defense Regulators peptides (IDRs) are extremely valuable in the development of new treatment strategies for multi-resistant bacterial infections. My post-doctoral project focused on the potential protective effect of immunomodulatory cationic peptides derived from bactenecin such as IDR-1018 in a murine acute lung infection model induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Prophylactic and therapeutic treatments with IDR-1018 as well as different routes of administration have been investigated to fully understand the immunomodulatory mechanisms of action of the peptide.“Identification of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa genes involved in the regulation of virulence-related processes and antibiotic resistance”Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen responsible of nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients. Therapy is becoming increasingly difficult as this pathogen has become multi-drug resistant and has now joined the rank of “Superbugs”. Functional genomics studies have highlighted a number of genes involved in the regulation of the antibiotic resistance and virulence-related processes. In collaboration with other researchers, we studied the in vivo virulence phenotype of several Pseudomonas mutants exhibiting alterations in motility and/or in biofilm production. The role of the Pseudomonas Lon protease in a murine acute lung infection as well as the role of the Pseudomonas sensor kinase CbrA was investigated in murine peritoneal infection and in acute lung infection models
