When I first met Laura I knew there was something different and strong about her. As I worked with her very closely for the entire year of 2010 in El Salvador to produce a short documentary about her and her work, I realized what it was. Laura is one of the most dedicated artists I know, and practically re-invents the meaning. She gives herself completely to everyone she works with and knows. She is true to her belief that Art is powerful in its ability to communicate ideas, and create catalysts for social change. Her work has taken her to new places and experiences, only broadening her ambition and impact on the people she meets. A leader in any group, I would recommend Laura Smith in any circumstance I can think of.

About This is East: "The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded East Somerville Main Streets, in conjunction with the Somerville Arts Council, a grant to fund a placemaking initiative for East Somerville during 2014 and 2015. The initiative, called “This is East” will celebrate, maintain and promote East Somerville’s identity at this time of change for the neighborhood. The Visual Placemaking Project is only one piece of a much larger placemaking initiative that includes events, video stories, and more." Show less
