This OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) sponsored project, led by the Pirbright Institute, involved evaluating the availability and efficacy of current African Horse Sickness vaccines and vaccine candidates.Roles included reviewing scientific and patent literature, elaborating surveys and questionnaires in conjunction with other colleagues and report writing. I was also involved in project administration, organising and co-ordinating project meetings (in the UK and France) involving international project participants.

My Ph.D. project studied the immunogenic and antigenic properties of African Horse Sickness virus VP7. This protein naturally forms bi-dimensional para-crystalline structures. I was interested in exploiting these features of VP7 to develop a universal vaccine delivery platform. I collated the results of this research and prepared my final PhD thesis dissertation which describes the potential of this novel vaccine development concept.

The MSc. degree was a combination of taught and practical modules. The taught portion of the course addressed control issues through an integrated programme in the biology, diagnosis, epidemiology, prevention and management of infectious disease in, or arising from, animal populations. For practical and skills training, I requested a project on African Horse Sickness and was able to secure an eight week research project at The Pirbright Institute (formerly The Institute for Animal Health), characterising the kinetics of VP7 specific antibody responses in horses and donkeys infected with different African Horse Sickness virus strains and serotypes, indicating when VP7 antibodies can be detected after infection.

This degree had a broad module content ranging from human genetics, plant science to applied animal nutrition and metabolism. The university ran a scheme where the top students in the year were selected to take part in a two week field course to investigate the effects of human influence on avian species abundance and diversity in the Great Fish River Reserve, South Africa. This counted as a module towards my final degree. The data was collected in South Africa and analysed in the UK. A report was submitted as part of the module.
