Growing up surrounded by nature and books, my mother was a firm believer in no media, offering me a chance to connect to the rhythms of nature, and learn accordingly. My Waldorf journey did not start until much later, when my son first attended a Waldorf inspired Kindergarten. I quickly became fascinated with the language and routines of a simpler lifestyle, and started volunteering. As my son's class got older, around fourth grade, I found myself attracted more towards learning chid development, and soon applying principles and lessons in a pedagogical fashion became second nature to me. For the past year I have worked as an assistant for First Grade at Desert Star Community School. What a pleasure! Helping my teacher in such ways as classroom management, individualized attention where needed, and general support were my strong points. Knowing when to step in, knowing there is only one ego in the room, and when to step back is also a skill I employed ! I enjoyed holding the class when my teacher needed a break, not to mention the afternoon rice/oatmeal and dance parties (Waldorf inspired of course). My compassion was honed quickly ; witnessing everything from a minor scrape to signs of trouble at home. I don't know if it was because it was my first year working as a member of the faculty, but I came close to elation and exhaustion regularly. This is not a job for the weak. My favorite part of the job was watching the children form into little beings, and knowing I gently supported this process is heartwarming and highly rewarding. I am looking forward to formal Waldorf education and working more with this wonderful school. Show less
