Common Threads connects kids to healthy food in the garden, in the kitchen, and at the table. We want kids to grow up making food choices that are good for their bodies, their communities, and the environment. Founded in 2006 and based in Bellingham, Washington, Common Threads is a grassroots, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes a “seed to table” approach to food production, good nutrition, and environmental stewardship. Most of our programs take place on public school grounds, during the school day in collaboration with classroom teachers. Additionally, Common Threads runs after-school and summertime gardening and cooking programs. When kids are engaged in growing and preparing healthy food, they are much more likely to make good food choices. And when kids get in the habit, early on, of making good food choices, there’s a dramatic decrease in their risk of suffering from food-related problems such as hunger, diabetes, and obesity. Kids who eat well learn better, act better and feel better. Empowering young people to make healthy food choices is one of the simplest ways that we can help all youth – particularly those living in high-risk circumstances – to be more successful in their lives physically, emotionally, and academically.
