During the full six-week duration at this prestigious summer school, I was responsible for teaching A1 to B2 level English to teenagers from countries including Argentina, Japan, China and Russia. I consecutively delivered energetic, engaging and creative lessons on topics such as food, culture, health and debating skills. Whilst teaching topics useful for everyday language, I also integrated an interactive and communicative model of learning. I designed role-play scenarios using realia and classroom setups to help the students activate their English language skills and a number of grammar points including conditionals, modal verbs and tenses. I focused heavily on phonology in my lessons and by presenting the IPA chart through a comprehensive number of fun activities, I was able to improve the students’ pronunciation considerably during this short period of time. Whilst living in Berlin, I set up an open community space with my friends in the district of Kreuzberg. We were an experimental project hosting workshops such as Trade School, art exhibitions that promoted local creativity and German language exchange dinners that provided a safe space for the community. This was a non-for profit project and I learnt many skills from seeing the process transform from an initial idea into a well-established pillar of the community. I derived a great deal of satisfaction in how to promote and organise a space economically without losing sight of its main objective, which was to provide a space for everyone to enjoy.
