Our senior design project involved recreating the standard peritoneal dialysis catheter transfer set to provide a more appealing and inconspicuous design for end stage renal dialysis patients. As the team leader, I assured that proper communication was kept between our team, mentors, professors, teaching assistants, and all other individuals involved in our project. I sent out weekly emails and agendas to keep everyone up to date, arranged meetings, helped with the 3D printing of our prototypes, led presentations, and assisted my teammates wherever needed. One impactful moment was when we traveled down to Little Rock to the DaVita dialysis clinic to meet with our mentor and tour the clinic which allowed us to gain knowledge about peritoneal dialysis, become familiar with dialysis equipment, and further expand our ideas for our design. As a team, we had several noteworthy accomplishments including successfully obtaining a U.S. patent (US Patent 63/404,799 - Date filed: 9/8/22) and winning the Seed Fund Pitch business competition organized by the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. One of nine interns (selected from a large pool of minority applicants) chosen to participate in a competitive 9-week summer research program for undergraduates seeking careers within the healthcare field. The Summer Undergraduate Research Program to Increase Diversity in Research (SURP) is a NIH-NHLBI sponsored program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Under the guidance of my mentor Alexei Basnakian, MD, PhD, DSc, I researched the use of TUNEL assay for the assessment of stroke mitigation by DNase inhibitor in rats. Show less
