In February 2020 I started teaching English at the ThomaS English academy in the Barcelona region. When the COVID-19 pandemic made in-person work impossible, I suggested to my boss that we start offering classes online. He took up this idea, and I have been teaching online for ThomaS English ever since. My classes have ranged from 3 to 8 pupils, and all age ranges, from 6 year olds to teenagers to adults. Moving classes online has forced me to adapt to new methods of teaching, but it also enabled me to enrich my classes using all the tools that online learning provides. On top of our traditional textbooks, we also practice reading using real-life texts from the internet (Buzzfeed articles are great for this). For writing classes I use Google Docs, which allows students to all work together on the same document, and for me to give specific feedback in the form of comments and the “suggested edits” feature. I also help my students to prepare presentations on Google Slides, which is great practice for their oral English. Kahoot is another tool that is perfect for online learning. It is great for testing vocabulary, as they can match a picture to a word, and the “true or false” questions can be used to see if they can tell whether sentences have grammatical mistakes or not. Finally, we also play several games to practice and to make sure that the kids stay engaged. For example, Scribbl.io, an online form of pictionary, lets kids practice vocab and spelling without even realising! Show less

As I started my MA in Media Studies, I decided it would be worthwhile to gain work experience in the field. As such, I took on a remote internship at Dark Matter marketing, a young, recent startup that creates advertising campaigns on social media. As I was doing this alongside studying and teaching English, the workload was intense. However I was able to gain great insight into the ins and outs of social media marketing. I was given a wide variety of tasks, including writing copy for social media posts (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn), preparing in-depth SWOT analyses of clients, designing advertising campaigns for special events, writing articles for SEO, and writing digital marketing guides for new platforms (Tiktok). Whilst living in Beijing I had the opportunity to work part-time in an after-school English class, where the number of pupils would range from 3 to 10, and with a large variance in ability within groups. This meant that the lessons I designed would have to be flexible and adaptable, with extra work prepared for advanced pupils, and extra individual time provided for struggling pupils. My work involved between 2 and 4 two-hour sessions per week, for different groups, and (though textbooks and workbooks were provided) allowed for a large degree of autonomy. I made sure that my classes had a healthy balance of book work, listening activities, speaking opportunities, and games. By the end of each semester almost all pupils were able to move on to a higher difficulty of work. My employment there lasted between October 2015 and June 2016, when I began to prepare to move back to Europe. Show less

In my tutoring I would provide bi-weekly four-hour sessions during which my pupil and I would work through English language and grammar textbooks, children's storybooks, and entertaining videos and songs, as well as engaging in language learning games and activities. I divided the sessions up equally between speaking, listening, reading and writing, and would switch between activities in order to keep my pupil interested. Having begun from a very small base-knowledge of English, by the end of the year she was able to read with relative fluidity, craft and retell short stories, and understand almost everything that was said to her. She seemed to find my lessons engaging, and became more and more comfortable when speaking with me. Show less
