In this role, I'm assigned to El Paso Electric where I conduct vulnerability and risk assessments for their corporate network, help design security policies, use vulnerability scanning tools (Nexpose, Nessus, Nmap, Risksense, Ivanti Landesk) to conduct individual and group assessments, and recommend solutions. I have been the lead on several projects, ranging from remediation to large-scale forensics and implementation of new security initiatives. I returned to Litchfield (see below) to continue growing their IT infrastructure. During this time we upgraded VPN tunnels to multiple IPSEC tunnels for file access across offices, migrated to a paperless office system (Imageright), upgraded the Windows domain through successive versions of Windows server software, and upgraded the remote VPN system to allow for redundant systems for underwriters to access their desktops and quote from anywhere. We overcame major server crashes (hardware failure, environmental issues, power grid failures) during this time as well. I performed lots of work supporting the Imageright paperless office initiative, including server and software upgrades, collaborating with consultants on changeovers to new versions, workflow design and testing, database and server maintenance, general troubleshooting and adding or transferring server data where necessary. Email and fax systems were also transitioned to new services for seamless integration. We expanded our use of virtualization to decrease our server footprint and energy costs, moving multiple servers (including the paperless office system) into virtual servers. I also served as sole designer for Litchfield and subsidiary web sites, including most graphic design. Show less

Working for the Materials Science Department under Dr. Chianelli, I was responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of the SGI IRIX workstations and servers across the UTEP campus, and keeping the servers secure and updated. The servers ran several specialized chemistry and biochemistry software packages for use in both research and classroom work (undergraduate and graduate), and I was also responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of those packages. I was initially hired by Litchfield Special Risks as their first dedicated IT hire to build their internal IT infrastructure from the ground up, going from a single Novell file server and eight PCs to a full Windows domain with multiple servers handling email, DNS (FreeBSD), and Windows domain services. The company added multiple offices which I connected via static VPN tunnels and PPTP VPN tunnels for the end users to connect to from home or remote offices. I set up and maintained a PHP web site for the company, including graphic design for said site. All servers and PCs for the company were built in-house. Show less

      • Feb 1998 - May 2001

As a server administrator for a division of Acer, Inc, I was responsible for transitioning to a Windows domain from a Novell architecture and setting up the domain trust for all facilities in North America (DHCP, DNS, WINS, file/print servers, etc.). I led the project to test and install firewall and anti-virus services, and served as Acer's North American Center of Excellence for anti-virus and virus outbreaks responsible for designing and implementing virus response and prevention procedures. In that capacity, I worked with an international team of experts, including IBM's CERT, on containing and resolving outbreaks, as well as providing after-action reports tracing the outbreak from origin to conclusion. I also received training in network monitoring packages, such as Unicenter, and served as the North American Center of Excellence for that knowledge domain. During the Y2K run-up, I oversaw the North American Y2K vetting process and wrote a final report to Acer's VP of Operations. My duties had some overlap with the Engineering department, where I helped to design, program, and implement test flows for PC manufacturing, and set up a clean room at plants in the US and Juarez.
