I ran two plants simultaneously - one was the ammonia refrigeration plant on the production side and across the street the controlled atmosphere plant, were we both refrigerate AND adjust the "air mix" percentages to put the fruit "to sleep", allowing local Okanagan apples to be enjoyed over the Winter months. The function involved sole operation of one, or simultaneously two, advanced Skid Heaters capable of up to 35 Million BTU, supplied by either natural gas - via pipeline, CNG or LNG - or by propane. In some configurations, operation of a Pressure Reduction System is also required, such as that provided by Certarus. Duties include constant monitoring, troubleshooting, fault correction, maintenance, minor repairs, regular reporting, rig in and rig out. Plus, one season’s experience in the water division, moving large volumes of water via flexible hose and large centrifugal pumps (managing 2 to 5 at one time), as per specific client requirements. Self-employed sub-contractor deployed to assist completions teams - post drilling - to initiate and optimize well flows. Role was to provide heated water by operating 600HP packaged skid pad Scotch Marine Firetube boilers (3rd Class hours) on well pads, and at times, concurrently running 125HP boilers to provide working steam. Most common configuration involved the operation of a heat exchanger to heat both feed water and water for completions processes on a cycle basis. Function included sole operation of unit(s) during 12 hour rotations at various times of the year. Duties included rig in, operation, water testing, maintenance, minor repairs, rig out and transportation of office trailer and/or generators. Boiler pressures exceeded 100psi and required at times a 25 degree heat differential at 4 cu. m flow rates. Constant adjustments were necessary as role involved reacting to changes in water flows and output temperature requirements. Took a role with Aureus as Encana and several other companies have adopted Aureus as their prime vendor. Show less

Once it was known that I was a 4th Class PE I was given insiders perspective on their jobs, technologies, etc. Was given a detailed tour of the Pilot facility, Surmont 1. Firebag was my first assignment, and provided my first look inside a Big Oil SAGD operation; I knew then that I wanted to make a career of it. I transferred as I heard there were more hiring opportunities at CPC at the time. After I earned my 4th Class Power Engineering certificate I took a job with Garda World security, with the hopes of obtaining employment within a SAGD operation. Firebag was my first assignment, and provided my first look inside a Big Oil SAGD operation; I knew then that I wanted to make a career of it. I transferred as I heard there were more hiring opportunities at CPC at the time.
