My project pertains to synthesizing and characterizing alginate analogs that would prevent a host immune response. We will test these analogs in a screening project in order to see if these molecules elicit a host immune response.

I worked in Dr. Kumar's biological/physical chemistry lab with doctoral students. We utilized chemical dyes, lipids, and proteins to see if we can manipulate electromagnetic radiation through FRET (Fluorescence Energy Transfer). The objective of our research was to develop a mechanism to increase solar cell efficiency through biodegradable means.

I traveled to Merida to volunteer at Los Hogar del Angeles, a nonprofit dedicated to providing food, shelter, and other resources to indigenous families whose kids have cancer. My activities ranged from keeping up with the donor list to helping out the families with anything they needed. I also took social policy seminars during my time there and participated in cultural exchanges with my host family.

I took classes in global health and epidemiology that were taught by two emergency medicine physicians at both UC Berkeley and UCSF Medical School. I also learned how to triage, perform CPR, take a person's blood pressure, suture, and even participate in mass casualty simulations. At UCSF, I was able to develop clinical skills through simulation with dummies.
