I founded the first Students Opposing Speciesism (SOS) social hub in all of Canada and I am currently the first SOS hub organizers for the St. John’s area. Through this role I have gathered likeminded individuals together, where we have the common goal to educate others about animal rights/cruelty. I have organized and led protests, demonstrations, and initiatives, showcasing my leadership skills. Our main goal at the moment is to raise awareness about fisheries and the impact they have on ocean ecosystems and animals such as whales. Fisheries have had a tremendous impact on Newfoundland, and it’s important to preserve what little we have left.

Worked in Dr. Chris Kozak’s chemistry lab, alongside graduate students. His research focuses on creating biodegradable polymers and plastics. In this role I helped with experiments, checked inventory, read research papers, and gained an understanding of how higher level research works! It was a very hands on experience, and I learnt so much about different chemical compounds, polymer chains, and real life applications of how they are created and how lab equipment is used. In my grade 10 year, I shadowed Dr. Nepomnaschy and Iearnt about the research they conducted and created my own inquiry question. Through this experience I able to learn first hand about what happens in a lab. Dr. Nepomnaschy’s work focuses on the reproductive health of women in Guatemala, and as a young woman myself who’s passionate about persuing medicine in the future, I found my role fulfilling and one that aligned with my personal values. One of the projects examined the effects that environmental, health and social stressors exert on reproductive function in a group of Mayan women in the highlands of Guatemala. This society lives under subsistence conditions with intervals of restricted food supply, associated threats of infectious diseases and other seasonal, psychological, and environmental stressors. The first set of results suggests that stress, even when not acute, can seriously affect women's reproductive function. I helped collect data from samples, read scholarly articles, and helped with organization. I was also able to present my work, findings, and experience with my teachers and classmates at Burnaby North Secondary School, teaching me critical presentation skills.
