Die Kantonsschule ist mit ihren 150 Jahren eine der ältesten Kantonsschulen der Schweiz. Bis zur Eröffnung der Kantonsschule Wil im Jahr 2004 war die Schule auch die grösste Mittelschule der Schweiz (mit zeitweise über 1800 Schülern).
