On summer 2019, I had the amazing opportunity of observing for 4 weeks the day-to-day life of transplant surgeons at the Oxford Transplant Centre, housed by Churchill Hospital. I was located at the renal outpatient ward, following the morning rounds and helping the nurses or the residents. Specifically, I learned tips on how to take a medical history and perform a clinical examination. I would listen to the heart and lung sounds of some patients and ask relevant questions along with the attending doctor or resident. I would discuss with the residents about ABG and ECG results, as well as how to read and recognize structures in the CT scan. Apart from the clinic, I scrubbed in on various transplantations, like kidney transplantation, AV fistulas, pancreas transplantation, laparoscopic nephrectomies. I assisted by holding the retractors or the laparoscopic instrument and cutting sutures. It was an excellent experience as it refreshed my anatomy knowledge on a real human perspective. In conclusion, this externship gave me an insight into the patient-centered care of the UK and helped me practice the most important skills: communication by history taking, and the clinical examination. But most of all, it taught me that even though the work of a surgeon or any specialty is exhausting, it is also rewarding to see your patients' health improving because you put in the hard work.
