Taught 9th grade history (Cultural Geography) and Writing Skills to students in PAS (Program for Academic Success), a program tailored to the needs of students with moderate learning differences. Collaborated with the school's resource specialist to design a Cultural Geography curriculum that is rigorous yet accommodates students' different learning styles. As a Writing Skills teacher, I provided literacy support to students as they attended a regular English class, assisting them as they tackled grade-level reading and writing assignments. In addition to offering one-on-one support, I utilized No Red Ink, an online skill-building program that allows students to go at their own rate. As an after-school tutor, I provided one-on-one support for any student in the school who needed help with various assignments. I also ran a weekly Mindfulness club, and taught students various meditation and stress-reduction techniques. I have credentials in both English and History, and in the five years I spent at El Cerrito, I taught English (grades 9-12), History (9th--Cultural Geography and 10th--World History), and Journalism. Influenced by my interdisciplinary humanities background, I created curriculum that encouraged students to analyze literature within the larger historical, cultural and socio-political contexts out of which they emerged. I was also a member of the Media Academy at ECHS, and enjoyed collaborating with colleagues to create cross-curricular, multi-media projects with our students. Over the years, I welcomed various organizations into my classroom when they were launching pilot programs at the school. As a result, my students received one-on-one help through the Writer Coach mentoring program, and designed and executed community service-oriented projects under the guidance of mentors from Future Leaders Institute. I also participated in and received training for a Restorative Justice initiative and a Mindfulness program. I integrated these practices into my classroom in an effort to help students reduce stress, resolve conflict, develop healthy communication skills, and to contribute to their resilience, emotional intelligence, and sense of community. WCCHS was a small charter school designed to reflect the same principles as Challenge Day, an organization that promotes empathy, equity and inclusivity through dialogue and experiential exercises. Taught English (11th grade) and Poetry (Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced). I was one of only two teachers that taught in both the academic and arts programs. This stellar urban charter school provides high level training to young people who aspire to creative professions. As an English teacher with students who were dancers, singers, artists and actors, I integrated the arts into assignments, resulting in highly creative yet rigorous work. My poetry classes covered the fundamentals of both reading and writing various genres of poetry, and students created chapbooks and an anthology, and performed spoken word in local competitions. I took my students on field trips, had guest speakers, and assisted in the production of a short documentary in which local artists were interviewed about their lives and their art. Show less
