polySpectra makes functional materials for advanced additive manufacturing (3D printing) using light-activated catalysts. polySpectra's modular platform enables delivery of materials with a broad spectrum of tailored properties from a single chemical system. This process is called functional lithography. I developed cross-linking additives for 3D printing resins as well as investigating the use of naturally derived starting materials for their resins. My responsibilities included: • Performing microwave Diels-Alder reactions on polymers • Analyzing products with 1H-NMR and differential scanning calorimetry • Testing materials as additives in the ring opening metathesis resin Show less

I worked on two major research projects with a graduate student Marisa Weaver in Professor Thomas Pettus’ organic synthesis lab (UCSB). The first project was an investigation of conjugated Mukiyama-type aldol reactions on tetramic acid cores. I synthesized a variety of differently substituted tetramic acid cores to use in aldol-type additions. Once I had created a range of molecules with different substitutions, she and I both tested their reactivity as conjugated enolates. In the second project we developed a class of general use electrophilic vinylation reagents. These reagents were a series of differently substituted b-nitro xanthates. I optimized the synthesis of these molecules, providing a feedstock for testing their reactivity with different substrates. I am experienced with: • Running both large and small scale synthetic organic reactions • Running reactions under dry conditions and/or nitrogen atmosphere • Preparation of NMR samples as well as collection and analysis of NMR data • Utilizing thin layer chromatography as an analytical tool • Purifying compounds using silica column chromatography and distillation Show less

Planet Biotechnology uses plants to produce therapeutic antibodies. I worked at Planet Biotechnology for two summers. I was engaged in a group project to produce a recombinant flavoprotein, cryptochrome, under contract from DARPA. The thrust of my work was to increase the incorporation of FAD cofactor into the protein. I extracted and purified the protein from transgenic plants I had cultivated. I tested different conditions in each step of the extraction/purification process, analyzing each time for FAD content in the purified protein. I am experienced with: • Conducting experiments involving sampling of genetically modified plants • Preparing chemical solutions • Growing and maintaining experimental plants in greenhouse • Purifying and prepared protein samples • Quantifying protein content and cofactor binding using spectrophotometry • Running SDS-PAGE gels Show less
