A mathematical model was developed to optimise the selection of assets for a financial portfolio to achieve the optimal returns at a given risk. Real time financial market data was utilised from the Bloomberg terminal to present three model portfolios. A greater understanding of how optimisation methods, quadratic & non-linear programming, metaheuristic methods and computational approaches could be applied to the financial sector, was gained. Through the use of queuing theory and discrete event simulations our consulting team proposed a new appointment system to a local clinic in the Western Cape, overwhelmed with increasing demand in patients, long waiting times and extended staff working hours. Whilst in the management consulting environment, problem identification, operations process & flow defining, and professional client conduct skills were enhanced. I was tasked to conceptualise and develop the simulation model as well as interpretation of the models results. Show less

In this project a business model of a social entrepreneur startup company was presented in which critical thinking, problem identification and effective communication skills of solutions were enhanced. The proposal of a mobile app for an online grocery shopping experience was developed with delivery route optimisation algorithms used as a means to improve customer satisfaction. A broader insight was gained in how innovative solutions could utilise sustainable and effective technology to improve an individual’s life quality. Show less
