  I Work as a recreation therapy assistant in a psychiatric treatment facility provided for 16-18 inpatient adolescents. As recreation staff, we provide 2 recreation programs for the adolescents during the afternoon/evening. Staff offer individual recreation sessions to assigned residents to gain "mastery" in an activity, so they utilize that activity as a coping skill or a therapeutic need. Charting and documenting on resident's recreation therapy programs and individual recreation sessions are required by staff. Being a Recreation Therapy Assistant required extensive restraint training for kids who make act out and try to harm themselves or another person. I have been Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) trained and utilize those skills in working with residents to help them be able to function more effectively in recreation as well as in any other area in life they may need guidance in.
