I volunteered in Guatemala as an English tutor for the non-profit organization Safe Passage/Camino Seguro, where I supported elementary and high school students in the classroom setting, focusing on English fluency to broaden their opportunities of transcending poverty. I often discussed life experiences with my students, including the traumas they faced growing up in the most impoverished area of Guatemala. My students found some relief in sharing their experiences. Those moments have influenced and inspired me to become a counselor and helped shape my counseling perspective.
