Steven and I worked at Philips from 1998 till I left Philips in 2009. When I was running a branch of the design department, Steven entered as design researcher and immediately made impact on me with his straightforward, outcome-oriented approach. He wasn’t afraid to express his mind and lifted the quality and outcome of the design research activities noticeably. But he also was able to transfer the outcome to a business context, something that wasn’t happening that often. In this he displayed a rare skill of going deep into the details of exploration and research, but still connecting to the day-to-day business practice and realities. I enjoyed working with him, specifically on the Club Alp project! Hence, I wholeheartedly recommend him as specialist in his field but very much so as the person he is.

I am lucky and honoured to have worked with Steven since 2009 at Philips Design, based in Eindhoven, and he has been a transformational leader, generous mentor and enthusiastic colleague. Steven is generous with his insights, support and advice. I had the opportunity to work with Steven on publications, bids and strategic projects at Northumbria, and I have learnt so much from these interactions. Steven's leadership is pertinent to the strategy of the 'new age universities'; how universities and students are key to innovation, and regional development. Working with him has been an absolute pleasure. He is helpful, a powerful communicator and a good negotiator. There is so much more to learn from him and he is always open to help!

    • Chair of International Advisory Board : TU/e FACULTY of INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
      • Sep 2014 - Present

Since 2014, Chair of the advisory board of the faculty on strategy, Research direction and Education curriculum. With Stefano Marzano, from 2000, collaborated in defining the focus and scope of the faculty : design of intelligent interactive systems. Provided support in the set up and the development of the new curriculum and lead the 'Home' Unit with Kees Dorst. Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is located in a highly industrialized region, known as ‘Brainport’. This region is internationally recognized as a top technology area with a special focus on the integration of design and technology. When TU/e started discussions with the creative industries in 2000, they expressed the wish for a new type of academic engineer. These engineers should combine insights into different fields of knowledge, as integrators of visions and ‘problemfinders’. In essence they should be the designers of Intelligent systems, products and related services in a societal context, addressing aspects such as adaptive behavior, context awareness and highly dynamic interaction. These systems meet the needs of today’s users or, even better, offer new, breakthrough possibilities leading to societal transformations. For these reasons the new Department of Industrial Design (ID), the ninth at TU/e, chose a specific new field within industrial design matching the development, expertise and interests of the surrounding and international industries. An innovative educational approach was developed for students in this new field, based on competency-centered learning, with integration of education and research as one of the fundamental starting points of a university program. Research was gradually built up from 2002 onwards, resulting in four well established research groups integrating their expertise. The Department has set up a valuable international network, with staff and students originating from more than 25 different nationalities worldwide. Show less

StudyPortals began as a spin-off from a couple of large international study associations. It was born out of frustration a total lack of information and overview of the fast-growing number of international Masters in Europe. In 2007 MastersPortal was born and proved to be a roaring success. Soon after, Bachelors, PhD, Short Courses and Distance Learning Portals followed suit. Today, StudyPortals covers over 150,000 courses at 3,050 educational institutes across 110 countries. In 2017, StudyPortals helped over 28 million students around the world to explore study programs and make an informed choice. Show less
