Judge Nigel Lithman KC

Kwabena was part of Oxford Law Society Committee inviting me as Judge and KC to address the Society. He presents as an exceptional student academically, very well organised and enormously personable.

Kwabena is a young man with ambitions of becoming a lawyer. From the first day that we interacted and spoke about the future I was struck by how deep, intelligent and his ability to problem solve was at such a young age. Kwabena is hard working, a critical, innovative, able to articulate his ideas and offer solutions to problems that are outside of the box. These are qualities that all good lawyers should possess and are coveted by many. To have these at his age is a blessing. I have no doubt that he will become a great lawyer and he is for sure a future star in the making.

    • Micro-Internship
      • Mar 2022 - Mar 2022

Over the course of a week during the Easter vacation, I completed a paralegal micro-internship with Harris Kyriakides, a leading law firm based in Cyprus. During the placement, I was responsible for researching and preparing information regarding the use of AI within dispute resolution in varying jurisdictions such as the UK, Germany, and Estonia for an upcoming legal event. Through the micro-internship, I was introduced to online legal databases such as Westlaw and Lexis, and I further developed my commercial awareness as a result of observing how a law firm operated within a foreign jurisdiction.

    • Research and Policy Intern
      • Dec 2021 - Jan 2022

Between December 2021 and January 2022, I was a research and policy intern at Toynbee Hall, a charity based in East London that aims to tackle poverty and work with the local community to develop solutions to various issues through their ‘participatory action’ research. I worked on three projects during the internship, beginning with Toynbee Hall’s ‘Access to Cash’ project, where I collected data on the availability of ATMs and PayPoints within several constituencies throughout the UK, in order to contribute to the ongoing work done by peer researchers. In the second week, I worked in a team to prepare a presentation that focused on the upcoming May 2022 local elections in Tower Hamlets, researching information on local MPs and contacting them to discuss their intentions of running. This presentation was delivered to peer researchers and Toynbee Hall’s senior management, and its findings aided them in their ongoing research.

    • Summer Intern
      • Jul 2021 - Aug 2021

During my summer internship placement at the Institute for Government between July and August 2021, I worked alongside senior researchers and other interns on the Institute’s annual ‘Parliamentary Monitor’ report for 2021, which aimed to analyse and evaluate the actions of the previous Parliamentary session, as well as advise on how Parliamentary and governmental operations could be improved. My tasks during the 5-week internship included researching information using sources such as Hansard, a parliamentary record database, in order to provide factual information for the report. As well as this, I collected quantitative and qualitative data and used my existing analysis skills to draw conclusions and arguments which were later used in the report. Furthermore, I condensed complex legal and government documents into shorter, easy-to-understand ‘explainer articles’ for the Institute’s website. The final report was published in September 2021 and was heavily praised by important political figures.

I spent a week visiting the legal departments of large and influential companies, including Goldman Sachs and AIG, as well as being introduced to pro-bono work with the charity ‘Reprieve’. This experience showcased the many various fields of law that extended well beyond the traditional law firm route, and as well as this, I was also introduced to the operations of many other sectors, including investment banking, insurance, retail, not-for-profit, and entertainment. The week also included personal and professional development sessions that were designed to help us fully understand the skills needed to succeed in the professional world, and I benefitted from the contacts I gained from the various networking sessions that also took place.

As part of Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP)’s ‘Career Kick-Start Work Experience’ programme, I spent a week in BCLP’s offices shadowing trainee solicitors, associates, and partners within the Real Estate Litigation department. I carried out a number of tasks on behalf of various people within the department, such as legal research, where I collected information for a case on the installation of 5G in rural areas in England and the speculation surrounding its health risks. As well as this, I took notes during a meeting where lawyers had to decide whether to make an existing client bankrupt, as a result of their failure to exercise due diligence in relation to the management of their property. This, along with various talks, exercises, and activities, helped to develop my critical thinking skills and grew my interest in a career in corporate law.
