This two-year postdoc enabled me to further develop my research on public sector recruitment. The focus of my work was The TNPSC Research Project, a 5-year deep research engagement with the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) that built on a relationship I started during my PhD. TNPSC is the government agency responsible for conducting civil service exams in the state of Tamil Nadu. The research collaboration involved both academic engagement and technical support on using data in policy-making. Key milestones from The TNPSC Research Project: - Spent over 6 months embedded with the department full time, interfacing on a weekly basis with top leadership, and with heads of other government departments in the state, leading to concrete policy changes. - Released a 160-page solo-authored report that provides concrete policy recommendations for how the recruitment process can be run more effectively. Available here: https://kmangal.github.io/. - Wrote and deployed several pieces of software (in Python) to solve priority problems for the department, and which have been in active use. Position funded by the Weiss Fund for Development Economics at the University of Chicago. Show less

I provided data analysis and project management support for two research projects based on field experiments in Pakistan. I was involved in all stages of the project lifecycle, including grant-writing; sampling/randomization design; program implementation; data cleaning; data analysis; preparing manuscript for a journal; and responding to referee comments. The results of the projects I worked on have been published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics and the American Economic Review, available here https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qjv042 and here https://www.aeaweb.org/articles?id=10.1257/aer.20180277 Show less

I was responsible for implementing a large-scale evaluation of the impact of KGFS, a financial services company, on rural livelihoods. Responsibilities included: developing the randomization design, setting up internal data processes, and overseeing a staff of ~100 surveyors while collecting data from thousands of households across two districts.
