Course: Intermediate Clinical Practice Site/Floor: Ascension Southeast Wisconsin Hospital – Elmbrook Campus: 6th Floor – Surgical During this twelve-week clinical assignment I was trained to use Epic, shadowed nurses on the surgical floor we were assigned to and in the day-surgery unit, and performed two patients’ cares each shift, in the role of the aid and the nurse. I prepared to care for my patients by reviewing their charts, I received report from the patients’ aid(s) and nurse(s), I obtained vital signs, performed head to toe, and focused, assessments, administered the patients’ medications, and assisted them in their activities of daily living. I provided patient education. The patients I cared for were admitted for health concerns such as alcoholic hepatitis, postoperative infections, and total hip arthroplasties. I was exposed to a variety of patients with varied medical concerns and histories. I participated in shift hand-offs and wrote sample nursing notes for each patient. I created two care plans based off of my clinical assignments. I was able to apply classroom theory and clinical experience interchangeably. Show less

I obtained vital signs, performed assessments, and administered medications. I gained valuable clinical experience. I was able to take the time prepare for patient care, I assisted with patient transfers, and participated in hand-off reports. I learned and worked with my classmates and embraced the importance of teamwork in healthcare. I completed a quality improvement project regarding the importance of documenting and monitoring intake and output on a medical-surgical floor. Show less
