Head of Communications (Public Relations & Media Manager)
-
Oct 2013 - Aug 2016
At 24, I was appointed to run the entire communications office for the Falkland Islands Government. In the three years I was in charge, I increased staffing by 100%, increased budget by 400% and developed the service from a reactive press office to a dynamic, forward-thinking and proactive government department. We developed our political monitoring and lobbying capabilities in two languages and increased social media capacity into 4 channels posting in two to three languages depending on necessity and campaign. Falkland Islands Representative before the United Nations Decolonisation Committee
-
May 2016 - Jun 2016
As the Falkland Islands Representative to the UN, I travelled to the Annual Regional Seminar on Decolonisation held in Managua, Nicaragua. I addressed the Seminar on a range of subjects about the Falkland Islands' development and economic self-sufficiency, and countered arguments that the Falkland Islands people were not entitled to be involved in any conversations about sovereignty, I also put forth that the principle of self-determination is a human right applicable to the people of the Falkland Islands, who are a people in their own right. . This was a very demanding opportunity, as I was keenly aware of the fact I had been selected to represent the views and needs of my entire community, in front of one of the world's leading organisations. There are very strong views presented during the Decolonisation Committee meetings, and largely, the attendees are opposed to British administration of the Falkland Islands. I needed to be tactful and respectful of the opposing views of those Members around me, but I also could not roll back on the views of the people I was there to represent. In the margins of the seminar, various delegates approached me to congratulate me on my interventions and my fresh, honest approach to how the Falkland Islands feel about the decolonisation process. Following the Seminar, I then travelled to New York to participate in the final session of the Decolonisation Committee, alongside Members of Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands Show less
