    • Unit Coordinator/Lecturer - Work Integrated Learning
      • Jun 2015 - Apr 2016

I was the project manager of an international student mobility program with Curtin University via the Federally funded New Colombo Plan International Student Short Term Mobility grants. Students receive a scholarship to participate in international fieldwork in China. Part of my role was to coordinate and oversee the complete process from advertising, recruitment, reference checking, to liaising extensively with the Chinese partner host sites, arranging accommodation, flights, visa's, itineraries, insurance and all risk management processes. Supporting the students once they are in their placement is paramount to the success of this international program and debriefing on their return critical to ensure their overall well being. I was also Lecturer and Unit Coordinator for the WIL unit, Engaging With Community. Students are coordinated to complete 100 hours of fieldwork placements in both local and international locations. Assisting students to identify local or international host sites is part of my role, as is liaising with the host site partners. Host site partners are identified and assisted to sign contractual agreements with the university, whilst I provide guidance on student expectations, deliverables, academic requirements etc. Liaising with the host site partner I also ensure they have a good understanding of Curtin's obligations in relation to insurance and all risk management processes. My role with the students also involves extensive preparation, briefing, and orientation sessions to prepare them for the work place with a focus on how to engage with local industry and community based organisations. I also assist them to develop an understanding of workplace expectations and culture (in both local and international locations) and assist in the creation of fieldwork placement portfolios that can be used to enhance the students future employability. • Clinical Educator and Country Coordinator (Cambodia)
      • Jan 2012 - Jan 2016

I coordinated an Inter-professional International Student Mobility Clinical Program known as Go Global - Curtin University's flagship health sciences student mobility program. I worked mostly independently project managing two inter-professional trips per year to Cambodia for 4 years. I was required to organize and maintain; an annual budget, all international and domestic travel, visas, accommodation, itinerary, interpreters, country specific documentation, in-country host site partners, spreadsheets, financial documentation for students travelling to Cambodia. I liaised with and prepared students for their in-country experience, including; pre and post trip counselling, orientation sessions - cultural competency and sensitivity, culture shock, use of interpreters, language workshops, health requirements, host site logistical and client specific needs, disease oriented workshops and fundraising advice. I also developed Action Plans for students with academic or medical issues, and have an active role in identifying staff to act as supervisors, and then train them for clinical supervision. I travelled to Cambodia at least once per year which involved; daily clinical supervision at the host site, cultural orientation, daily de-briefs, on-going academic, emotional and emergency support, and remote supervision of students after their supervisor left. I maintained contact with host site partners, and other NGO’s, to develop relationships with a view to ensuring the longevity and functionality of this partnership. I was intricately involved in curriculum development and assessments for this unit and as an academic marked all course work from Cambodia placed students. I was also required to liaise with staff within the Faculty of Health Sciences to ensure students meet Go Global and specific school requirements. In conjunction with the Go Global team I reviewed Go Global’s fieldwork, insurance risk management plans and emergency preparedness guidelines annually. Show less

    • Clinical Nurse - Refugee Specialist
      • Jun 2008 - Dec 2013

I was employed as a Clinical Nurse (Community Health) (Level 2.4) at the Humanitarian Entrant Health Service (HEHS), where approximately 95% of the 1500 refugees that come to Western Australia each year are seen. Refugees are assessed, screened and treated for communicable and infectious disease and they also receive a psychological assessment. Referrals are made to either government or private agencies as required. I also regularly liaised with Refugee Community Health Nurses, Refugee Nurses and medical staff at PMH Refugee Clinic, along with GP’s and Practice Nurses regarding refugee client care. Vaccination is a key part of the role and planning for future vaccines is also carried out. I was the Immunisation Supervisor and Assessor for both the HEHS and Tuberculosis Control Program WA (which is co-located with our service) and this requires education, training, assessment and supervising Registered Nurses as they complete the Department of Health approved Immunisation Certificate. I developed a Catch-Up Vaccination tool specifically for refugee clients that is used extensively in this service. I was the HEHS representative for the Good Food for New Arrivals Network (via ASeTTS) and for the Family Planning WA committee for the development of CALD sexual health education tools. I also represented WA as a Refugee specialist nurse with RHeaNA (Refugee Health Network of Australia). I regularly supervised and mentored nursing students at all year levels from Curtin University and Edith Cowan University. I was the contact person for all medical student placements in our unit and regularly supervised medical students at both 1st and 5th year level from the University of WA. I left this position to complete my Masters in International Health. Show less
