The purpose of this project is to study the distribution of biogenic VOCs or BVOCs contributed by the vegetation in the study area about 45 km southeast of downtown Nashville, Tennessee that includes cedar glades, other forest areas, agricultural land, and new suburban developments. This study will investigate how the concentrations of isoprene and other biogenic compounds in the wooded area would fluctuate in summer months and how the urban developments in the vicinity can impact the levels of emission. The primary mode of sample collection will be based on fixed location sampling. Sampling will also be conducted in wooded areas in underdeveloped regions for comparison in order to study the impact of anthropogenic emission on the regional atmospheric chemistry. The air samples will be collected into 6-liter canisters for analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with cryogenic preconcentration to achieve detection limits approaching 0.1 part per billion.
