My position involved serving as scientist on projects, project management, and business planning and development. In the role as soil scientist, I worked on ecological, stormwater compliance, green infrastructure, and contamination projects in Wisconsin and across the United States. Projects ranged from developing an ecological land stewardship plan for a 1-mile long riparian corridor, authoring standard specifications for revitalizing urban soils in a Wisconsin metropolitan area, and to developing a green infrastructure plan for an US Air Force Base in Alaska. As project manager, I headed a group focused on water quality and restoration ecology. In business planning, I facilitated an organizational structure change for our business unit (BU) due to growth and staffing demands; facilitated strategic meetings with engineering leads to understand strengths, weaknesses, and priorities; and worked with company resources to overhaul marketing materials and proposals for our BU.

Other responsibilities involved doing calculations for a legal case, working on company-wide administrative documents (i.e., employee handbook, EEO policy and compliance, and field manual), preparing project work plans, and developing and analyzing a client questionnaire regarding new and current services.

Co-owned and managed a growing, women-owned, design-build business where our philosophy was integrating the disciplines of landscape architecture and restoration ecology for private and public clientele on projects ranging from floodwater, stream, and wetland restorations, habitat restorations, green infrastructure (GI), stormwater management, and environmental permitting. My primary responsibilities included strategic planning and executive management (accounts management, employee management, business development, marketing, business planning, budgeting, and insurance/certifications), strategizing and organizing design teams for proposals, review and authorization of contracts, interviewing/hiring/firing/management of employees, review of design deliverables (plans and specifications), authoring and reviewing project reports, developing and reviewing qualification statements and construction bids, coordination with contractors, vendors, A/E firms and clients, and consulting on design & planning projects that often involved public involvement. During my tenure, we turned the company from mostly residential clientele to a mix of municipal/government, non-for-profit, architects/engineers, and residential that produced award-winning projects and often awarded work over larger regional and national A/E firms. Because we were both contractors and designers, we changed & improved our designs in reflection of field results rapidly. And because we worked for a diverse group of clientele, we brought the perspective of a private resident to the larger, public projects often run by large engineering firms, and vice versa. I spent the last two years at the company working on culture, organizational structure, employee development, internal processes, standardization of plans and specifications, standardization of marketing materials, and developing new partnerships to diversify our reach and capacity.
