I managed CivicSpark, a Governor’s Initiative AmeriCorps program dedicated to building capacity for local governments to address community resilience issues such as climate change, water resource management, and access to opportunity. Each year, CivicSpark recruits 90 fellows—50 Climate Fellows, 20 Water Fellows, and 20 Opportunity Access Fellows—who serve with local governments for 11 months. In collaboration with local government staff, CivicSpark Fellows implement a needed community resilience project, while also building long-term capacity to ensure the work is sustained after their service year is completed.Through National Service, CivicSpark contributes to a more resilient and just California by:- Building local government capacity to address entrenched and emerging issues;- Serving as a social purpose career accelerator for future leaders; and- Fostering lasting, authentic community engagement. In CivicSpark's first four service years, Fellows provided over 230,000 hours of service to California’s communities, implementing over 300 targeted projects to support over 140 local government agencies and reaching over 15,500 community members, including residents, business owners, and the general public. CivicSpark was the winner of the 2017 Service Year Alliance Impact Award (Mid-Size Program) and has been recognized by CaliforniaVolunteers for providing an exceptional member experience to Fellows.
