Sutter Medical Center OrthopaedicsDr. Michael Petersen, M..D. & Dr. Andrew Opfell, M..D., Dr. Scott Porter, M.D.01/03/2012 – PresentPosition: Physician Assistant, Surgical First AssistI currently work at a small hospital in Davis, California with an upper extremity specialist, Dr. Michael Petersen, and two general orthopedists, Dr. Andrew Opfell and Dr. Scott Porter. My time in the OR is primarily spent assisting on anterior approach THA, as well as TSA, rotator cuff repair, and labral repair. I am really enjoying being in the OR and continue to learn more about the different surgical procedures which in turn help me to better understand my patient’s symptoms in the office. I take care of patients in the office, both pre- and post-operatively by first, helping to diagnose and determine the proper treatment course, and then by providing care for post-surgical recovery and rehabilitation. I contribute to the practice by seeing an average of 25 patients per day in the office setting as well as by assisting in the operating room.

I began working at FFSMG as a new graduate and was able to solidify and expand on the things that were learned in school both on the broad spectrum of family medicine as well as an orthopedic focus. Hence, I was able to diagnose and treat many sports related and non-sports related injuries in addition to the broad range of abdominal pain, headaches, rashes, women’s health, etc. I established a rapport with patients by making them feel comfortable in discussing their medical concerns and demonstrating that I truly care about their well-being. I was able to develop trust by proving to the patient that I can competently diagnose and treat their various medical conditions. I also managed the office’s wellness program and educated and assisted patients on implementing healthier lifestyle habits by developing personalized diet plans and encouraging increased exercise. Additionally, I contributed to the practice financially by seeing up to 25 patients per day. Other responsibilities consisted of taking histories, performing physical exams, diagnosing, prescribing medications, interpreting diagnostic tests and performing other tasks related to patient care.

I began working for Dr. Larsen during my undergraduate schooling. My original plan was to become a psychologist working with troubled teens. However, that plan changed as I realized how exciting it was to work in the medical field. I thoroughly enjoyed assisting the doctor and he sensed my newfound passion for medicine. Therefore, he trained me to use the ultrasound imaging machine that we used to view tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis and even foreign bodies. I was certified in taking podiatric x-rays and was trained to assist him on minor, in-office surgeries such as ingrown toenails, arthroplasty, nerve decompression, syndactylization, etc. I also assisted in the treatment of sports injuries by giving ultrasound therapy and treating neuropathies with Anodyne light therapy. I learned a great deal about establishing a rapport with patients and was able to increase my ability to show compassion towards patients. It was an invaluable experience that motivated me to further my career in the medical field and pursue the PA profession.
