Using my skills in leadership and program development to help rural Guatemalan communities create and establish a culture of reading through teacher and librarian training programs Established literacy programs in rural areas of Guatemala through teacher workshops and individual follow up sessions that have impacted 27 communities and approximately 7,000 elementary school students Co-taught 25 workshops annually for 280 teachers and librarians that focused on developing critical thinking and comprehension skills for the educators and their students Key contributor in developing curriculum for 4 different workshops and follow up training sessions Provided follow up by visiting classrooms, modeling reading techniques and helping teachers to implement new reading strategies Developed assessment tests to measure changes in comprehension skills. Administered tests to 525 students from grades 1-6 and tracked results Implemented cataloging program and worked with 7 libraries to train their staff, catalog their collection and begin lending programs Served as interim school librarian for one year, spending one day per week leading a reading hour in 7 classrooms totaling 235 students. Created accompanying activities to build comprehension skills. Worked with teachers in promoting the use of the library. Established a lending program that resulted in loaning 1,800 books the first year. Taught weekly reading classes at a school for 120 indigenous women studying to be teachers Led a curriculum team that developed manuals for a 5 week vacation reading program, Adventures in Reading, which has now been implemented in 17 rural communities Oversaw volunteer program, coordinating logistics and training for approximately 5 volunteers per year who provided help in teaching workshops, cataloging libraries and supporting reading programs Created a receiving and distribution system to distribute 25,000 books annually to 50 schools and libraries Show less
