  In this 6-12th grade independent school, my role as 6th grade English teacher is to help our youngest students gain college preparatory reading, writing, speaking, and thinking skills. Through exposure to authors from a diverse array of backgrounds (Black, LatinX, indigenous, white, and differently abled, for example) my students see themselves reflected and also gain windows into the lives of others, enabling them to thrive in a diverse society. Have I mentioned these 11 year olds write 6,000-16,000 word novels during the month of November as part of National Novel Writing Month? Because they do and it is magic. You can even find their books on Amazon because they are published and distributed. This is primarily possible because of their creativity and determination but my unwavering support and belief in them and their skills helps bring them across the finish line.
